Diabetes care bills across devices, education, and visits

An endocrinology practice bills visits, interprets continuous glucose monitor data, and may run diabetes education. Each piece has its own code set, and education only pays when the program is accredited. Device suppliers also depend on your notes to get paid.

What shapes an endocrine claim

Thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal visits follow ordinary office rules. Diabetes care adds three layers.

CGM services

Starting a patient on a CGM and interpreting the data are separate codes. 95249 covers patient-owned equipment and is reported once for as long as the patient keeps the same receiver, while 95251 covers analysis and report, usually once a month.

Diabetes self-management training

DSMT bills in 30-minute units with G0108 or G0109, and only through a program accredited by the ADA or ADCES. Medicare also does not allow DSMT and medical nutrition therapy for the same patient on the same date.

Devices and insulin

Medicare covers CGMs for patients who take insulin or have a history of problematic low blood sugar, and covers non-disposable external insulin pumps as DME. The supplier bills the device, while your notes show the patient qualifies and keeps up routine visits.

Decide who carries the diabetes paperwork

Endocrine billing runs through the clinic, the education program, and device suppliers at once.

What the practice keeps

Your clinicians document visits, CGM interpretations, and education referrals, and they approve codes before any claim is sent.

What Taiga would take on

Once fit is confirmed, Taiga would draft codes from notes and CGM reports, check eligibility, scrub claims for frequency limits, and work every denial and appeal.

Where a decision is needed

If your DSMT program bills under its own NPI, or supplier requests for CGM and pump records pile up, agree who handles them before the switch.

Questions for an endocrinology fit call

Bring de-identified CGM reports, an education schedule, and a few denials. Patient details are not needed to book a demo.

Do you run an accredited DSMT program?

Say which organization accredits it, who teaches, and how sessions are recorded.

How do you handle CGM starts?

Explain whether patients bring their own devices or use office equipment, and who reviews the data each month.

What else do you treat?

List thyroid, bone, pituitary, and obesity care, including in-office procedures such as thyroid biopsies.

For endocrinology and diabetes practices

Worth a call if your practice bills its own claims and spends staff hours on CGM frequency rules, education billing, and supplier record requests. Your current EHR stays in place.

Supplier and pharmacy claims are separate

CGMs, insulin pumps, and insulin are billed by suppliers or pharmacies, not the practice. This page covers the practice's own professional and education claims.

Questions about endocrinology billing

Does Taiga bill endocrinology?

Endocrinology is not on Taiga's public specialty list. Describe your diabetes and endocrine services on a call to learn whether it fits.

How often can we bill CGM interpretation?

95251 is generally billed no more than once a month, or as the payer allows. 95249 is reported once for as long as the patient keeps the same receiver.

Can we bill DSMT and medical nutrition therapy on the same day?

Not for Medicare. CMS does not allow DSMT and MNT for the same patient on the same date of service.

Who bills the CGM itself?

The DME supplier or pharmacy bills the device and sensors. The practice documents that the patient qualifies, such as insulin use or problematic low blood sugar, and keeps up routine visits.

Bring your diabetes service mix
