Medicare covers acupuncture for one condition only

Medicare pays for acupuncture only for chronic low back pain, and it cannot pay licensed acupuncturists directly. Most acupuncture revenue rides on commercial plans and patient pay. Taiga drafts codes from notes for clinician approval and works every denial, so start by checking whether your mix fits.

Three acupuncture billing realities

The payer and the provider type decide what a visit can bill.

Narrow Medicare coverage

Medicare covers up to 12 visits in 90 days for chronic low back pain lasting 12 weeks or longer, plus 8 more when the patient shows improvement. The yearly cap is 20 treatments, and acupuncture or dry needling for any other condition is not covered.

Who can bill

Physicians can furnish it under state rules, and PAs and NPs can when they hold an accredited acupuncture degree and a full state license. A licensed acupuncturist treats Medicare patients only as auxiliary personnel under the required supervision.

Commercial plans set their own terms

Covered conditions, visit caps, and credentialing for licensed acupuncturists differ from plan to plan. Checking eligibility before each course of care matters more here than in most specialties.

Who does what

Treatment notes and the progress record drive the claim, especially past visit 12.

The practice keeps

Treatment notes, outcome measures showing improvement, supervision records, and decisions about cash-pay pricing. The clinician approves codes before submission.

Taiga takes on

Eligibility checks, claim scrubbing, submission, patient statements, and work on every denial and appeal.

Needs a decision

Agree who counts Medicare visits against the 12 and 20 limits and who confirms improvement is documented before the 13th visit.

Before an acupuncture fit call

Bring a de-identified treatment note, your payer list, and a denial or two. Do not enter patient details in the booking form.

Who is the billing provider?

Note whether claims go out under a licensed acupuncturist, a physician, or an NP or PA, and how supervision works.

What share is insurance?

Estimate how much revenue comes from commercial plans, Medicare, workers' comp or auto claims, and cash.

Which conditions do you treat?

List the main complaints you see, since coverage turns on the condition more than the technique.

Where it may fit

Acupuncture clinics and integrative practices that bill insurance regularly and want an experienced team on claims and denials. Taiga works with your current EHR and can take over open A/R.

What this page leaves aside

Cash-only practices and membership models fall outside a claims-based partnership. This page does not confirm Taiga support for acupuncture.

Questions about acupuncture billing

Can a licensed acupuncturist bill Medicare directly?

No. Medicare cannot pay licensed acupuncturists directly. They can treat Medicare patients as auxiliary personnel under the supervision of a physician, PA, or NP.

How many acupuncture visits does Medicare cover?

Up to 12 in 90 days for chronic low back pain, and 8 more if the patient improves, for a maximum of 20 a year.

Does Medicare cover dry needling?

Only for chronic low back pain under the same acupuncture rules. Medicare does not cover acupuncture of any type, including dry needling, for other conditions.

Does Taiga bill for acupuncture practices?

Acupuncture is not on Taiga's published specialty list. Bring your payer mix and services, and Taiga will tell you straight whether it fits.
