Keep OpenEMR and hand off the billing module work

OpenEMR is a free, open-source EHR and practice management system licensed under the GNU GPL. Its billing module is deep, and every install is set up a little differently. A billing partner can take over the claim work while your OpenEMR setup stays as it is.

How claims leave OpenEMR

The OpenEMR project documents a claim path from encounter to clearinghouse. Taiga would pick up the steps your team hands over.

Complete the encounter

Charges go on the encounter's Fee Sheet, with a justifying ICD-10 code for each CPT line. Taiga drafts those codes from the note, and the physician approves them.

Generate claims

In Fees, Billing Manager, staff select encounters and generate X12 files or CMS-1500 forms. The validation log shows errors that would stop a claim.

Send to the clearinghouse

The X12 batch is uploaded to the practice's clearinghouse, or sent by SFTP if configured. Confirm which route your install uses.

Post responses and payments

Claim responses and ERAs are applied back in OpenEMR. Taiga works denials and appeals and handles patient statements.

What an OpenEMR practice gains

The system stays open source and under your control. The billing workload moves.

No license change

OpenEMR stays your record; Taiga works alongside the EHR you already run.

Fewer validation dead ends

Claims that fail X12 validation get corrected and resent instead of sitting.

Billing know-how on call

Instead of piecing answers together from forums, a dedicated team owns the claim work.

Confirm these in your OpenEMR install

Every OpenEMR install differs, so these answers come from your setup.

Who hosts and supports it?

Name your host and support contact, and the OpenEMR version you run.

Which access level fits?

OpenEMR limits billing to administrators, authorized users, and users with Accounting access. Create a dedicated billing user rather than sharing logins.

Which clearinghouse and route?

Confirm your clearinghouse, whether X12 files are uploaded by hand or SFTP, and how ERAs come back.

What is open?

Pull open claims and balances so Taiga can take over A/R or run in parallel.

For practices running OpenEMR

Useful for practices that chose OpenEMR for control and cost but find its billing module takes more staff time than they have.

No OpenEMR integration is claimed

OpenEMR is a community-run open-source project, and this page claims no connection, certification, or endorsement from it or any host. Access is set up by your practice and confirmed during onboarding.

Questions from OpenEMR practices

Is OpenEMR really free?

OpenEMR is open source under the GNU GPL. Hosting, support, and customization can carry costs depending on who provides them.

Can Taiga work in our OpenEMR install?

Taiga works alongside your existing EHR. Your practice creates a billing user with the right access, and the details are confirmed during setup.

Do we need a clearinghouse?

Yes. OpenEMR generates X12 claim files, but the practice needs an account with a compatible clearinghouse to send them.

Can Taiga take over our open claims?

Yes. Taiga can take over open A/R or run in parallel with current billing while the switch happens.

Show Taiga your OpenEMR billing setup

Bring your version, hosting details, clearinghouse, and open claims list. Taiga will show where it would take over.
